A breakdown on a Southern California freeway is stressful partly because the right call depends on where you stopped and whether anyone is in danger. Here's who to call, in order.
First: Are You in Danger?
If you're stopped in a traffic lane, anyone is hurt, the car is smoking or leaking fuel, or you can't get to the shoulder, call 911 right away. On California freeways, 911 calls about traffic hazards go to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), which can send an officer and close a lane if needed.
Keep your seatbelt on and stay in the car unless it's on fire or you can get completely away from traffic behind a barrier. Standing next to a car on a freeway shoulder is one of the most dangerous places to be.
Made It to the Shoulder? Turn On Your Hazards and Pin Down Your Location
Before you call anyone, work out exactly where you are. The dispatcher will need:
- The freeway and direction, for example northbound I-5 or westbound SR-91
- The last exit you passed or the next one ahead
- Any mile marker or postmile sign you can see on the shoulder
- Which side you're on: right shoulder, left shoulder, or center median
Your phone's map app helps, but a nearby exit name is the most useful detail you can give.
Free Help: Freeway Service Patrol
Los Angeles and Orange Counties both run a Freeway Service Patrol (FSP), operated by Metro and OCTA together with the CHP. During weekday commute hours on covered freeways, FSP trucks patrol for stranded drivers and help for free: a jump start, a tire change, a little fuel, or a short tow off the freeway to a safe location. FSP won't take your car home or to a shop, but it can get you out of a dangerous spot. If you're on a covered freeway during commute hours, an FSP truck may reach you before you even call.
Your Roadside Plan: AAA or Insurance
If you have AAA, call them or request help in the AAA app. AAA sends an authorized local provider, such as KO Towing & Recovery. Many auto insurance policies and newer-car warranties include roadside assistance too. The number is usually on your insurance card or in your insurer's app.
No Coverage? Call a Local Tow Company Directly
If you don't have roadside coverage, call a local towing company. Ask for a price before they dispatch, and say where you want the car to go: home, your mechanic, or a dealer. A reputable company will give you a price and an estimated arrival time over the phone.
While You Wait
- Stay buckled in with your hazard lights on
- Keep your phone charged and stay reachable, since the driver may call to find you
- At night, turn on your dome light so the truck can spot you
- Don't accept help from strangers who weren't sent by CHP, FSP, AAA, or the company you called
