Free Tow-Away Signs That Meet California Law
Without the right signs, most private property tows aren't legal in California. We supply and install compliant tow-away signs at every entrance to your property at no charge when you sign a towing agreement with us.
What California requires on the sign
California Vehicle Code §22658(a)(1) sets the rules for the signs that make private property towing possible. If a sign is missing, too small, or missing required information, a tow from that property can be challenged, and the property owner can be held liable for double the towing and storage charges.
- • At least 17 by 22 inches, with lettering at least one inch high
- • Posted in plain view at every entrance to the property

- • Lists the phone number of the local traffic law enforcement agency
- • Lists the name and phone number of each towing company you have a written towing agreement with
What we do
- • Walk the property and count every vehicle entrance
- • Supply signs with the correct police or sheriff's number for your city and our name and number
- • Install them where drivers can actually see them when they pull in
- • Replace signs that are damaged, faded, or stolen
- • Add signs for your own rules, such as permit-only, resident, or customer parking
When a sign isn't required
The law has a few narrow exceptions. A lot with a single-family home doesn't need the posted sign. A vehicle can also be removed without the sign if it was issued a notice of parking violation at least 96 hours earlier, or if it's missing major parts such as an engine, wheels, or a windshield and the property has notified police at least 24 hours before. Everything else needs proper signs first.
Frequently asked questions
Do the signs cost anything?
No. Signs and installation are free when your property signs a towing agreement with KO Towing & Recovery. We also replace damaged or missing signs at no charge while the agreement is active.
We already have tow-away signs. Do we need new ones?
Maybe not. We'll check your existing signs against §22658. If they're missing a required item, list a former towing company, or aren't at every entrance, we'll replace them.
Can the signs say parking is for residents or customers only?
Yes. Along with the required tow-away language, signs can state your own rules, such as resident permit parking, customer parking only, or guest parking limits. We'll help with the wording.
